Our tour guide explained to us that when the French were invading Britain around 1100 or 1200, the people in the castle dug extensive tunnels under the castle and outward so they wouldn't be noticed! In the most creepy way, it was awesome walking through them and thinking about people walking through them 800 years ago, fighting off an invading army.
When I was 1 or 2 years old, my parents took my brother and I to England and Dover was one of the places we went! Obviously I don't remember anything from being there 20 years ago, but it was a really cool feeling to look over the white cliffs and think that my little eyes as a baby had seen this before!
The other nice thing was actually getting to be out of the city! Living, working and going to school inside the heart of London 5 days/week is completely different than what I'm used to back home in New York (I had never even taken a bit of real public transportation until living in NYC, other than a bus to and from south campus!) My roommates and I sat and climbed on this ledge and, if we weren't on schedule, we would've stayed all day. It was beautiful.
Wow, this looks awesome! It's neat that you guys get to do guided things out of the city every once in a while. I don't know for sure, but I think for my internship, any day trips I'd like to do I'd have to plan and set them up on my own in order to see the things I'd want to see and do.

ReplyDeleteWhen my mom comes in a few weeks we're planning on doing some trips (she wants to go to Dover hah so I will be back here soon!) But I would recommend finding some time to get outside of the city for sure!
Aw that's awesome your mom is coming to visit! That's one thing I wanna do as well. I'd have my mom come and visit for a week at the end of my internship and I'd show her all the things I've seen.

ReplyDeleteshe wants to take a day-trip to Scotland and another to Dover again of course. I'm hoping to ride the London eye! I don't really mind what we do, I'm just happy she's coming!

ReplyDeleteI did that and it was soooo worth the money. I'd do it during the day and at night. At night would be beautiful with all the lights and Big Ben lit up. I didn't get a chance to do it at night last time, but that's totally on my list for when I go back!
Would you consider doing a day trip to Paris? I think it's pretty easy to arrange. You don't have to fly, you could go across the English Channel.
